As noted in a previous post, the gPhone, if it is developed, will incorporate the Android platform. The open source platform, developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance is along the same concept as Linux—a free source whose code can be modified and freely distributed by anyone who knows how to do that sort of thing.
In watching a demonstration video of phones using the Android platform, the different applications are very exciting. The aim, according to the video, is to use this platform to develop limitless numbers of “uPhones”—phones that will be completely customizable by the users in terms of what you need and want it to do.
The platform is planned to be run on a 3G wireless network, the same as the 3G iPhone that’s expected to debut sometime this summer. No single phone is expected to have the Android platform, which is perhaps why talk of an actual gPhone has died down.
Another fun feature is a virtual web browser history, akin to what we saw last year in all those promising MS Vista ads of the cascading windows. This is another feature that is a variation on the iPod and iTunes software that lets you do a visual scroll through album covers and the like.
The Android platform will also be able to mix 3D and 2D graphics, so you can play first-person shooter games on your phone! If that isn’t good living, I don’t know what is!

The all important question. Partly the reason the whole gPhone rumours began flying was because the iPhone was being praised and people wondered if Google wished to deal yet another devastating blow to their competitors, in this case, Apple.
But can they do it?
In our opinion, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that the gPhone will completely pwn the iPhone.
Google is the biggest website in the world, surely a simple ad on the homepage would yield huge sales? We use google so much, so we know and trust it. Why not use their brand of phone too?
You’ve seen Google earth, so if they can manage to get satellite images of almost everywhere on the planet, so it’s no surprise they’re purchasing their own frequency for the phone.
Plans also show that the gPhone will be using open source Android platform, which will allow a helluva lot of applications to be written specifically for the product.
Google have seen their competition, and now aim to top it comfortably. They have the money and the power, so what’s stopping them?

Original details of the gPhone prototype have been as follows :
- Five inches long
- Three inches wide
- Touch-sensitive (I dare you not to ‘lol’ at that combination of those first three)
- A full sized QWERTY keyboard
In terms of software, you’ll be able check emails, edit text, and watch YouTube videos (surprise surprise!)
This information is for an internal design, code-named “Dream”.
Google have so far failed to deny rumour of them developing a phone, so this could well be it folks.
